Advanced Maternal Age - AKA: Too old to be pregnant!

Today I began my first series of "genetic" testing for old pregnant people. Anyone over the age of 35 will discuss her family history to determine the risk of genetic malformations, such as Down Syndrome. Today I had an ultrasound to view the nuchal translucency (NT) - which is the skin fold thickness of the neck and the nasal bone. The NT had to be greater than 3.0 to show a chance of Down Syndrome. Thankfully, it was 1.3 and the nasal bone was intact, another good sign. I also had to do the first round of my bloodwork that goes along with this series of genetic testing.

Andrew was able to meet me at my appointment and was so glad because he hadn't seen any of my ultrasounds 'live' since I was 6 weeks along. This time, the baby was moving all over like crazy! You could see distinct arms, legs, belly, face, etc. He was so excited!

Pet Peeves

I know this is ridiculous, but I'm planning our next Ward Activity, two weeks away, an Adult only Murder Mystery Dinner and Dance. I have posted an announcement in the ward bulletin and last week it was announced in all auxiliaries that if people want to be a character in the Murder Mystery, they must RSVP to me by TOMORROW. There is even a really cute poster in the foyer of the church building, listing all the details, including the RSVP deadline.

So far, I have only received 2 responses. So, yesterday I painstakingly went through the ward directory online and entered all the listed emails into my address book. I then sent an email out to the 48 people I found - reminding them to RSVP to me by tomorrow.

I opened my email this morning and guess how many RSVPs I had?? ONE, and that was from my mother-in-law! My husband says, "well, I guess you'll have to cancel the event." No, we will just have a theme that has only 6 participants! Everyone else who shows up will be part of the audience and they will be able to figure out "Who Dunnit" if they want, but we can't assign parts the night of the party because each theme is configured for a certain number of participants. I planned on giving out the character and theme info to all participants later this week so they have time to get a costume together.

I know I'm complaining, but why can't people RSVP? This behavior isn't isolated to this instance...I have held many parties in the past where people do not RSVP and I have called around, left messages, had no idea how many to plan for and have had people show up that I didn't plan for. I have not always been an "RSVP-er" either, but I will vow to never do that again!!

Even though I listed this Title as "Pey Peeves", after venting about the RSVP, I don't feel compelled to list any other pet peeves. I will spare everyone my complaining today!! Thanks blog, for letting me vent!

Andrew's Graduation from UCF

Andrew & his proud mother, Jean

Andrew with parents Dave & Jean - and Peyton's head below Andrew! She had to be in the picture again, but wasn't cooperating, so we just let her think she was in it!

For not taking a nap (since Graduation was at 2 p.m.), Peyton sure was funny today! She was so excited to see daddy in his "dress". She kept asking why he had a dress on because he is "not a girl"! How observant!

Andrew with his gramma, Helen. Andrew is the first person on his side of the family to graduate with his Bachelor's Degree. Now that he's finished, he thinks he just might keep going!

Me, Peyton & Andrew after the event. Now you can see how tired Peyton is.

Report from my OB Visit Today

I saw my doctor today and it was the first visit that we were able to hear the heartbeat with with doppler - it was 169. I was able to hear the heartbeat right at 6 weeks when I had an ultrasound and then again last week at the high risk ultrasound, but this time Peyton was with me. I told her that we were going to the doctor and maybe we would get to hear our baby. When we got home, I was talking with her about it and I asked her if she remembered hearing the heartbeat. She said, "yeah" and I asked her what it sounded like and she said, "a car!" Well, I guess there's some truth to that!

Anyway, all is well at the doctor and no news to report. Luckily, I only lost 4 pounds since my visit 4 weeks ago. I confessed to my doctor that it would've been more (and it was as of last week), but I have been indulging in the hospital cafeteria's biscuit & gravy for breakfast about twice a week!! I know its bad and I shouldn't be eating it so often, but when its the only meal I'm really able to keep down, I'm enjoying it!! She laughed at me...then refilled my Zofran prescription!

For those of you who are pregnant and suffering from the acid, indigestion, constant burping, do yourself a favor and go to Walmart and buy yourself some Pepcid 20 mg - not 10 mg - and take one pill morning and night. In a few days, you should see some results...I hope!! I'm going to take my first one tonight!!! I'll try just about anything at this point!!

Food is the ENEMY

In pregnancy, everything resolves around food - and not in a good way in the first trimester! If I'm hungry, I don't feel well. If I've stuffed myself (doesn't take much to do this), I feel sick. If I've eaten the "wrong" thing, I feel sick. There is NO happy medium...

The difference this time is that I started to feel yucky at 4 1/2 weeks along!! I started vomiting at about 5 1/2 weeks. With Peyton, I was queasy all the time and barely had an appetite and vomiting didn't start until 9 weeks and was over at 13 weeks. I don't remember throwing up with her nearly as much as I have been this time and I lost 11 pounds in the first trimester with her. This time, I've definitely been throwing up more - usually 6 out of 7 days and at night when I'm trying to go to sleep. This time, I throw up all the time, but I DO have an appetite! Strange!! Its really true that all pregnancies are different, just like all labors are different and all children are different!

I have an appointment this morning at my OB to see how things are going. Hopefully they will refill my prescription for Zofran, my "anti-nausea" medication...even though it doesn't take it all away, I just feel better having more on hand!

Ultrasound Pics

These pictures were taken last week at my High-risk appointment with the Perinatologist. I was 9 weeks 3 days and this is our first picture that actually looks like a human instead of the pea sized sac picture I had a few weeks ago at my first appointment.

It may be hard to see, but you can see the face, two little limb buds where the arms will be (on the second pic), and the body. Even at 9 weeks, this kid is very active! No wonder I've been so sick!!

First Things First

I am WAY behind on all the events that have been happening. Rather than start at the beginning, I'm going to start with today and work my way backwards.

For those of you who don't know yet, we are expecting a baby due in mid August. I am 9 weeks 3 days today and have pretty much felt like trash the entire time. Pregnancy does crazy things to your body and its difficult to think that this tiny fetus, not yet an abdominal organ, can cause so much GI distress!! I felt nausea with Peyton off and on and vomited occasionally off and on from about 9 - 13 weeks and even lost 11 pounds. But this child has me puking 6 out of 7 nights! I have felt queasy since 4 1/2 weeks and feel like I'm car sick most of the day and then need to lie down horizontally at about 4 p.m. before the puking starts. Usually I'm lying in bed trying to go to sleep and start puking over and over again. I hope none of you are eating while reading this! What can I say? I'm a nurse and not much grosses me out!
